Watkins Glen 1992 Copyright Joyce Jackson I've added a new page to show my submmittals for being among 49 other artists who will paint fresco paintings for a Community Fresco Project in Honor of Troy’s Historic Little Italy. All 6 of my submissions are found here They are not representative of the kind of work that will be done for the show. They are only examples of work I've created in the past. I've selected this group from among my work to demonstrate that I can work in a variety of media, can paint the human form, and most any other type of subject. I can't think offhand of anything that I can't paint. I don't mean to sound boastful, but once you advance beyond a certain stage in your artistic development, nothing is impossible to depict fairly accurately and well. Copying from a photo is not very hard to do. At least that's been my experience at this stage of my artistic life. It's only a matter of doing studies when you get stuck on any aspects of the subject at hand. I usually take photos or refer to pre-existing ones. Next, I might do sketches of the subjects in various positions. After that, I might opt to make copies of the drawing I like the best to try out a different color scheme for each copy.

Formerly on exhibit now through May 11, now extended to May 17, 2 of my works in a group show by myself and other Schenectady Art Society members, taking place at SCCC. That stands for... Be sure to stop by and check it out. Anyone remember the Kurt Vonnegut novel where he mentions the Schenectady post office? We're not content to only be known by our post office! ;-) Our artwork is here for you to enjoy and to purchase. Most or all of the work is for sale. Price, artist name, and dimensions are included in labels attached to each piece of artwork. On display you'll find a wide variety of media, subjects, and styles. The walls of this large, historic room are filled with the vibrant paintings and collages. Please call the college first to find out about scheduling for the room so that you can be sure to have access. One event I know of is being held there Feb. 24. Not sure, but you might be able to see the exhibit that day as long as it's not at the time the event is being held. Anyway, double checking with College security is advised. Special thanks go out to Carolyn Taylor, Debra Carpenter, and the other artists from this group whose time and careful attention has been dedicated to planning, developing, scheduling, setting this event up, organizing members' works, accepting deliveries, tagging and keeping track of entries, publicity, coordinating with SCCC staff, contacting members, the list goes on and on. There's a lot involved in putting on an exhibit. Their hard work is not to be underestimated and is greatly appreciated by all of us participants. Projection Here's one of my entries. Greeting cards illustrated with prints of this and more of my paintings coming soon. CANCELLATION ALERT Tonight's Art Night in Schenectady, NY described here, has been cancelled. I get to a scary stage with my paintings in progress. Sometimes this causes the stall factor. You procrastinate because you're afraid that if you touch what you've created so far, you'll ruin it. Maybe it comes with fascination over what you achieve if you've surprised yourself by how well things are coming along. Whatever the reason, if you want to get things done, you need to find a way to overcome this. One solution to this that I find is very helpful is to use Photoshop, aka PS. Once I have a photo of the painting at whatever stage it's at, I can add and remove elements easily in PS using layers. That way, I try them out but they're not a permanent part of them and they can easily be left omitted. My paintings are usually too large to scan into my computer before working on them in PS. I just take a digital photo of them and fix up the dimensions and color levels in PS. After I decide what I like and want to keep, I go back to the painting and paint it in. I may do this several times before I decided that the painting is finished. Here's my first pencil sketch of my most current work in progress: Here's how it looked after I added a few colors to try them out. I didn't add these colors in Photoshop. I added them directly to the painting. I was feeling pretty focused and didn't think I needed to try out anything in PS before making it permanent. After I did this much, I used PS to see how the dragon fairy at left of center dragon would look in a blue green blouse instead of the red color I gave her with colored pencil in my prelim sketch. Unfortunately, I didn't want to keep it, didn't save it and don't have it to show you. But now you get the idea. The picture has progressed further since I took these 2 pics. More may follow as soon as I get pictures to show you. |
